Patagonia River Conditions

Read this before you rely on it. Flow, water level and water temperature are read from automatic stations operated by the Dirección General de Aguas (DGA), Chile's national water authority. The DGA states plainly that its online data is provisional and subject to revision: a figure published today can be corrected later. Stations also fail — we have found one reporting a flow of exactly zero for days while its level sensor kept working, so we discard readings outside a plausible range for each river rather than publish them. Wind and rain are a forecast, not a measurement: they come from NOAA's Global Forecast System, a global model on a roughly 25 km grid. In Patagonian valleys the real wind can differ a lot from what a grid that size resolves, and models disagree — we have seen the same afternoon forecast at 34 km/h by one model and 64 km/h by another. Treat the numbers as a strong hint, never as a promise. Nothing here replaces local judgement, current regulations, or checking with us before you travel.

Our guided operation runs from 12 October to 30 April. The legal season in Chilean Patagonia closes in the first week of May. Outside those dates this page keeps publishing conditions for planning and for the record, but it is not an invitation to fish.

Wind and rain come from NOAA's Global Forecast System, a work of the United States Government in the public domain. We do not estimate, interpolate or round any of those figures — if a station stops reporting we say so rather than repeat the last value. Nothing on this page is estimated by us.

A river's flow moves little across one week, so on an axis starting at zero all seven bars look identical and the chart says nothing. We start the axis near the minimum — and we print where it starts, every time. A truncated axis without that label is the classic way to exaggerate a change.

With a fly rod the gust is what ruins the cast. We have seen a day with a 7 km/h average and 64 km/h gusts: the average said 'light' and the river was unfishable. A daily forecast never shows that.
