What did Carlos fish during his All Inclusive week out of Coyhaique?

Dry flies and sight fishing, on a different water every day, all out of Coyhaique. The trout were wild, and the photos show what the week looked like: clear river water, forest and rocky hills.

Three of the four photos were taken from a boat with knee braces, and in one Carlos is wading a rocky river. The fish are three brown trout, one of them very golden, and a rainbow.

What is sight fishing with a dry fly?

It is casting a dry fly to a trout you have already seen. Joe's sight fishing days on a Coyhaique lake explain it.

To tell whether a trout is eating on the surface or just under it, see how to read a trout rise. For the same game on moving water, read our spring creek sight-presentation guide. And for a dry-fly day on a lake, another client's sight fishing day on a clear lake shows it.

Why are the trout around Coyhaique so wild?

Because they are wild: the trout around Coyhaique sustain themselves by natural reproduction, with no hatchery stocking in the waters we fish. Brown and rainbow trout were introduced to Chile more than a century ago. A river-born trout that has spent its whole life holding in current and hunting for a living is a different athlete from a hatchery fish: its runs are usually longer, and the fight lasts. We explain more in why the trout here are so wild and aggressive.

That was Carlos's week: the thrill of the dry fly, and a first-hand look at how wild the trout of Coyhaique are. We release every trout we land, all season; the Aysén fishing rules explain what the law asks of a foreign angler.
